Certificate or declaration: how to understand what your product needs
How the forms of conformity confirmation differ, and who chooses the right one.
Two different mechanisms that are constantly confused: the EAC mark confirms conformity with a regulation, while Chestny ZNAK codes track the circulation of each individual unit of goods.
The EAC mark and Chestny ZNAK codes (the national labelling system) solve different tasks. The first says: the product conforms to the regulation. The second makes it possible to trace the movement of an individual unit from the manufacturer to the checkout.
| Parameter | EAC mark | Chestny ZNAK |
|---|---|---|
| What it confirms | Conformity with a technical regulation | Legal circulation of a unit of goods |
| Basis | An issued certificate or declaration | Registration in the labelling system |
| Where it is applied | The product, packaging, documentation | The individual packaging of each unit |
| Who applies it | The manufacturer or importer | A participant in circulation who has received codes |
For more on which set of documents the platforms ask for, see the article on documents for Wildberries and Ozon. For what to do if the document has not yet been issued, see the review of the forms of conformity confirmation.
The requirements for the mark itself are worded briefly, but they are violated regularly — usually because of the packaging design.
The EAC mark on its own is not complete labelling. Next to it there is a mandatory set of information, the content of which is defined by the applicable regulations. The minimum core is almost the same everywhere.
| Information | Note |
|---|---|
| Name and type of the product | Matches the conformity document word for word |
| Manufacturer and its address | The same as in the document |
| Importer and the person for claims | Mandatory for imported products |
| Country of origin | Stated explicitly |
| Date of manufacture | The format must be unambiguous |
| Service life or shelf life | If it is set |
| Storage conditions and precautions | If the product is used incorrectly without them |
The information is given in Russian. Some categories have their own additional fields: composition for food products and cosmetics, age for children’s goods, care symbols for textiles.
Imported products almost always arrive without Russian-language labelling, and the question comes down to the moment at which to apply it.
| Error | Consequence |
|---|---|
| The mark is smaller than 5 mm or its proportions are distorted | Considered improper labelling |
| The mark is present, there are no documents | A separate violation, risk of seizure |
| The mark is on the packaging but not in the operating documents | A claim for machinery and equipment |
| The name on the label does not match the document | The document formally does not refer to the product |
| The sticker covers the composition or the shelf life of the original | Concealment of mandatory information |
| Labelling is applied only to the transport packaging | The buyer does not see it — the requirement is not met |
Other badges are also found on packaging: RST, marks of voluntary certification systems, eco-labels, “verified” logos of varying degrees of invention. The difference is fundamental.
A voluntary mark next to a mandatory one is acceptable, but it must not give the impression that it replaces EAC. What exactly your product requires and in what form is covered in the article on choosing the form of the document.
The batch has arrived, and the mark is in the wrong place, of the wrong size or absent altogether. The order of actions depends on where the goods are.
Relabelling must not hide information on the original packaging. A sticker that covers the composition or the shelf life in order to place the EAC mark creates a second violation instead of solving the first.
